What is a “hazardous material?”
A hazardous material, by definition, is “any element, compound or substance that poses an unreasonable risk to health or property and which, because of handling, storage, processing or packaging, may have detrimental effects on emergency personnel, the public, equipment and/or the environment.”
The Walnut Ridge HAZMAT team began in 1999. The team has 14 technicians and every member of the fire department is trained to the Operations level.
The HAZMAT team started with a 16 foot fully enclosed trailer and has now grown into a 24 foot fully enclosed 5th wheel trailer and its own truck.
The team works with other area departments like the Pocahontas and Paragould Fire Departments with mutual aide agreements and the Lawrence County Sheriffs Department, Lawrence County OEM and the Lawrence County Communications Center’s Mobile command unit.
